Chapter 15

A call to Sheila Dixon assured Alex that everything possible would be done to make sure there were no “further incidents of this nature.” So when Alex walked into the condo Tuesday evening and the phone rang, she expected to hear her lawyer’s reassuring voice.

“Have a nice drive home?” The voice was garbled, low. This time it sent a shiver down her spine.

“Who is this?”

“I won’t miss again.” The line went dead.

Alex quelled the shaking she felt and clenched her teeth. She was not going to let this lunatic get to her. She hadn’t heard a peep from Armstrong, so she could assume that avenue was a dead end. The only thing she regretted was the fact that she wouldn’t be able to sleep outdoors anymore. Well, that and the fact that she had no gun.

“Lieutenant?” There was a knock on the door frame.

Armstrong looked up from his desk with wide eyes as Tom Robertson sat down in a chair in front of the desk. He and Tom graduated in the same class in the academy. Until they’d come together on the Homicide squad, they hadn’t worked together much, but their relationship had always been comfortable and casual. Lieutenant was a not a term Tom usually used when speaking to Cole.

“What’s wrong?”

Tom was staring at his interlaced fingers hanging down between his knees. Cole waited for him to speak, or at least raise his head.

“It’s about this shooting at the Masters woman’s place the other night.”

“I got your report. I didn’t expect there’d be anything to go on. Nothing we can do unless something else happens. Don’t worry about it.”

“That’s not exactly true, sir.” Tom finally looked up from his contemplation of his hands.

“Spit it out, Tom. Hemming and hawing only makes me edgy.”

Robertson got to his feet and moved to the door.

“May I?” He put on hand on the doorknob.

Armstrong nodded, and the door shut with a click. Tom seem to get hold of himself and he turned to face his boss as he leaned against the closed door.

“Nicky Morello may be the one who fired those shots.”

Cole stared at his detective long and hard.

“You know I’ve been staying in touch with Claire,” Tom went on. Cole nodded, saying nothing, just waiting. “Well Nicky ran away several weeks ago. Just before they put Ms. Masters on house arrest, actually.”

“Par for the course since his father…” It was hard to use the words, but Cole didn’t want to appear partial, and after all it was the truth. “Was killed. From what I hear anyhow. I don’t see what this has to do with someone taking shots at Alex Masters.” He managed to slip the surname in there with barely any noticeable hesitation.

“Usually only disappears for a day or two. Week at the most. When a week turned into two Claire called me.”

Tom produced a file from nowhere. Cole hadn’t seen it in his hands when he came into the office. Robertson placed the file on the Lieutenant’s desk almost with trepidation.
